Bosch E18

Pump Blocked

Medium severityExpert Guide

What Your Machine Is Actually Telling You

E18 is Bosch's slow drain code — the drain pump is working and water IS leaving, but the flow rate is below the minimum threshold. The board doesn't halt the cycle immediately (like E13 which means drain stopped entirely) but flags E18 as a warning after the drain phase exceeds its expected duration.

E18 vs E13: Think of it as a severity spectrum:
- E18 = drain works but slowly (partial blockage, ~30-50% restriction)
- E13 = drain doesn't work at all (complete blockage or pump failure)

E18 is actually more common than E13 because it represents the gradual buildup phase. Every E13 case was once E18 first — filters don't go from clean to fully blocked in one wash. They gradually accumulate debris over weeks and months.

Why E18 matters even though the cycle may still finish: A restricted drain forces the pump to work harder and longer. Pump motor lifespan drops significantly when running continuously at elevated current. Addressing E18 early prevents pump failure ($150-280 repair).

Bosch-specific detail: Bosch uses a very sensitive drain monitoring system. Some other brands would simply let the pump run longer without flagging an error. Bosch's early warning is a benefit — it tells you about a developing problem before it becomes a failure.

What You're Probably Seeing Right Now

  • Cycles are 10-20 minutes longer than normal.
  • You can hear the pump running for 5+ minutes during drain (normal is 2-3 min).
  • Clothes come out wetter — the extended drain still doesn't fully empty the tub.
  • The pump sounds strained — higher pitch than normal.
  • There may be a musty smell from the machine — partial blockage traps organic material.

DIY Fix — From Easiest to Hardest

1

Clean the Coin Trap Filter — Fixes 70% (10 minutes)

Same as E13 procedure:

1. Open service flap at bottom-front.
2. Use emergency drain hose if standing water present.
3. Unscrew filter cap slowly.
4. Remove all debris — even a **50% restriction** triggers E18.
5. Check and spin the impeller.
6. Rinse filter, check O-ring.
7. Reinstall and test.

**After cleaning:** Run a short cycle. Drain should complete in 2-3 minutes. If it takes 5+, the blockage is elsewhere.
2

Clean the Drain Hose Interior (15 minutes)

Biofilm and detergent residue coat the inside of the hose:

1. Disconnect hose from standpipe.
2. Pour hot water + vinegar through the hose.
3. Use a flexible brush if available.
4. Or replace the hose entirely ($10-25).

**Tip:** Replace drain hoses every 5-7 years as preventive maintenance.
3

Check the Standpipe (3 minutes)

Pour water directly into the standpipe. If it drains slowly, the clog is in your plumbing.
4

Run a Tub Clean Cycle (30 minutes)

Bosch washers have a **Drum Clean** (Trommelreinigung) cycle:

1. Select Drum Clean or the hottest cycle at 90°C.
2. Run empty with no detergent.
3. This clears residual buildup from the drum and drain path.
4. Alternatively: add 2 cups of white vinegar to the drum.

**Bosch recommends** running Drum Clean every 20 cycles.
5

Check Pump Impeller Condition (While Filter Is Out)

With the filter removed, inspect the pump:

1. Spin impeller — should rotate freely.
2. Check for worn or chipped blades.
3. If impeller is significantly worn — pump efficiency is reduced and E18 will persist despite clean filters.
4. Plan for pump replacement.
6

Prevention Going Forward

1. Clean coin trap filter every **4-6 weeks.**
2. Check pockets before washing.
3. Use mesh bags for small items.
4. Run Drum Clean cycle monthly.
5. Use HE detergent at proper dosage to reduce residue.

**Set a phone reminder** for monthly filter cleaning — it takes 3 minutes once routine.

When to Call a Pro

  • Filter clean but E18 persists — internal sump hose clogged. Technician: $100-$180.
  • Pump impeller worn — pump replacement: $150-$280.
  • Standpipe repeatedly clogs — plumber: $100-$200.
  • E18 upgrades to E13 — the blockage worsened. Same repairs apply.
