Power Failure

Low severityExpert Guide

What Your Machine Is Actually Telling You

PF stands for Power Failure. The machine was running a cycle when electricity was interrupted — either a power outage, tripped breaker, or the plug was pulled.

PF is informational, not an error. Your washer is simply telling you that the previous cycle was interrupted and asking what you want to do.

Common causes:
1. Power outage (40%) — municipal power interruption.
2. Tripped breaker (25%) — circuit overloaded.
3. Loose plug (15%) — plug fell out of outlet.
4. GFCI tripped (10%) — ground fault detected.
5. Faulty outlet (5%) — intermittent contact.
6. Internal power issue (5%) — washer power board.

What You're Probably Seeing Right Now

  • PF on display — machine stopped mid-cycle.
  • Power was restored and PF appeared.
  • Clothes are wet/soapy inside.
  • You heard a click then PF — breaker tripped.

DIY Fix — From Easiest to Hardest

1

Press Start to Resume (5 seconds — Fixes 95%)

1. Simply press **Start/Pause.**
2. The cycle resumes from where it stopped.
3. Or press Power Off, then select a new cycle.
2

Check Breaker (2 minutes)

If PF was caused by breaker:
1. Go to breaker panel.
2. Find the washer's breaker.
3. Reset it (flip off then on).
4. If it trips again immediately: electrical issue.
5. Washer should be on a **dedicated 15A or 20A circuit.**
3

Check GFCI Outlet (1 minute)

If outlet has a GFCI (Test/Reset buttons):
1. Press the **Reset** button.
2. Try the washer again.
3. If it trips during heating: heating element may have a ground fault.
4

Check Plug Connection (2 minutes)

1. Make sure plug is firmly in the outlet.
2. If outlet is loose: replace outlet ($5-10).
3. If plug prongs are bent: straighten carefully.
4. Never use extension cords with washers.
5

If PF Repeats Without Power Issues

If PF shows repeatedly and there's no power outage:
1. Check the washer's power cord for damage.
2. May be an internal power board issue.
3. Check for loose wires inside the machine.
4. Power board replacement: $80-200.

When to Call a Pro

  • Breaker keeps tripping — electrician: $80-$250.
  • Internal power board — $120-$300 installed.
  • Heating element ground fault — $100-$250.
