LG Sud

Excess Suds Detected

Low severityExpert Guide

What Your Machine Is Actually Telling You

Sud (or Sd) means the pressure sensor or motor control detected excessive foam. LG HE machines use very little water — regular detergent creates too much foam in this environment.

Why suds are a problem:
- Block sensors from reading water level.
- Cushion the drum, preventing spin.
- Can overflow into components.
- Sud is often followed by OE (drainage failure).

Common causes:
1. Non-HE detergent (40%) — too much foam.
2. Too much HE detergent (30%) — even HE can over-foam.
3. Soft water (10%) — needs less detergent.
4. Buildup from prior washes (10%) — residue.
5. Drain issue (5%) — water sits, foam accumulates.
6. Pressure sensor (5%) — false detection.

What You're Probably Seeing Right Now

  • Sud on display — machine paused.
  • Visible foam in drum or leaking from dispenser.
  • Machine pauses and resumes repeatedly.
  • OE follows Sud — foam blocking drain.

DIY Fix — From Easiest to Hardest

1

Wait (20-30 minutes)

LG will automatically:
1. Pause to let suds settle.
2. Add water and rinse.
3. Attempt to drain.
4. May repeat 2-3 times.

If it clears itself, the cycle resumes.
2

Run Rinse+Spin (No Detergent)

1. Cancel current cycle.
2. Select Rinse+Spin — add NO detergent.
3. This flushes the suds.
3

Cooking Oil Trick (Severe Foam)

1. Add 1 tablespoon of cooking oil to drum.
2. Oil breaks foam surface tension.
3. Run Rinse+Spin.
4. Rinse removes the oil.
4

Fix Detergent Usage (Prevention)

1. Use ONLY HE detergent.
2. Use **half** the recommended amount.
3. Soft water: use 1/3 recommended.
4. Liquid > powder (less foam).
5. Use dispenser, not directly on clothes.
5

Run Tub Clean Monthly

1. Run LG's **Tub Clean** cycle monthly.
2. Use washer cleaner tablet or 2 cups white vinegar.
3. Dissolves residual detergent buildup.

When to Call a Pro

  • Persistent Sud with correct detergent — sensor issue: $80-$200.
  • Foam damaged electronics — $150-$400.
