Bosch E16

Door Open

What Your Machine Is Actually Telling You

E16 is Bosch's door closure and lock error. The control board didn't receive confirmation that the door is securely shut and locked. On Bosch models, the door system has multiple components that must all work:

1. Door hook (Türhaken) — the plastic hook on the door that inserts into the lock housing.
2. Door lock (Türverriegelung) — the electrically operated lock assembly in the frame. Uses a wax motor or PTC element to drive the locking pin.
3. Door switch — a microswitch inside the lock housing that confirms closure.

Bosch uses a wax motor lock on many models (unlike the PTC used by Electrolux/Frigidaire). The wax motor works differently: when heated, a wax pellet expands and pushes a plunger that drives the locking pin. This is more robust than PTC but when it fails, symptoms are different.

E16 causes:
1. Door not fully closed (20%) — obstruction, worn hinges, or detergent buildup.
2. Broken door hook (25%) — Bosch uses a plastic hook that can crack or snap, especially if the door is slammed.
3. Failed door lock assembly (25%) — wax motor burned out or microswitch worn.
4. Gasket interference (15%) — the rubber boot pushes the door open slightly.
5. Wiring (15%) — cable from lock to board damaged.

The Bosch door hook is a known weak point. The plastic hook wears over time and can crack at the base. This is one of the most commonly replaced parts on Bosch washers. The good news: it's a $10-20 part and takes 5 minutes to swap.

What You're Probably Seeing Right Now

  • No lock click when you close the door and press Start.
  • The door doesn't click shut — the hook has worn or broken.
  • The door closes but bounces slightly open — gasket pushback or hinge sag.
  • E16 is intermittent — works sometimes if you push the door a specific way.
  • You can see the door hook is cracked or bent upon close inspection.

DIY Fix — From Easiest to Hardest

1

Check for Obstructions (1 minute)

1. Open door fully.
2. Run your hand around the entire gasket — feel for trapped items.
3. Check the hook and lock slot for debris/residue.
4. Close door firmly — listen for click.
2

Clean the Latch Area (3 minutes)

1. Clean the door hook with a damp cloth.
2. Clean inside the lock slot with a cotton swab.
3. Remove any detergent or softener residue.
4. Dry all surfaces.
3

Inspect the Door Hook (2 minutes)

**This is the most common mechanical failure on Bosch washers:**

1. Look closely at the **plastic door hook** on the door.
2. Check for **cracks at the base** where it pivots.
3. Check if the hook is **worn smooth** — it should have a defined ridge that catches the lock.
4. **Compare left and right:** if the hook looks significantly thinner or worn on one side, it's not engaging properly.

**If cracked or worn:** Replace the door hook. See next step.
4

Replace the Door Hook (10 minutes)

One of the simplest Bosch repairs:

1. Order the correct door hook using your **E-Nr** (model number).
2. Open the door.
3. The hook is usually held by **one screw and a clip** on the inside of the door.
4. Remove the old hook, clip the new one in.
5. Test — close the door, should click firmly.

**Cost:** $10-20 for the part. Common part, usually available quickly.
5

Check Door Hinge Alignment (5 minutes)

1. Open the door and look at the hinge assembly.
2. Tighten hinge screws.
3. Close door slowly — watch hook alignment with the lock slot.
4. Should enter dead center.

**Bosch doors are heavy** (especially on 9kg+ models) and hinges sag over years. Tightening usually restores alignment.
6

Test/Replace the Door Lock Assembly (15 minutes)

If hook is fine but lock doesn't engage:

1. Unplug machine.
2. Peel back gasket retaining ring to access the lock.
3. Remove lock (2-3 screws).
4. Disconnect wiring.
5. **Multimeter test:** Resistance across the wax motor terminals should be 800-1500Ω. OL = burned out.
6. If dead, replace with Bosch-specific part.

**Wax motor locks** are model-specific — the part number must match exactly.

When to Call a Pro

  • Door lock confirmed failed — replacement: $120-$250 with labor.
  • Door frame warped — the metal frame has been dented or twisted. Frame repair/replacement: $200-$400.
  • Wiring harness damaged near the door — hinge-side wire fatigue. Repair: $100-$200.
  • Board lock relay failed — board diagnosis: $80-$150.
