Samsung Sud

Too Many Suds Detected

Low severityExpert Guide

What Your Machine Is Actually Telling You

Sud (also 5ud or Sd on some displays) means the pressure sensor detected foam blocking the air tube, or the motor control detected abnormal resistance during spin caused by foam cushioning.

Why suds are a problem: Modern HE (High Efficiency) machines use very little water. Regular detergent creates far too much foam in this low-water environment. The foam:
- Blocks sensors from reading water level correctly.
- Cushions the drum, preventing proper spin extraction.
- Can overflow into components not designed to get wet.

Sud is often followed by 5C/SC — because foam blocks the drain pump.

Common causes:
1. Non-HE detergent (40%) — regular detergent in an HE machine.
2. Too much HE detergent (30%) — even HE detergent can over-foam.
3. Soft water + normal dose (10%) — soft water needs less detergent.
4. Previous detergent buildup (10%) — residue from prior washes.
5. Drain blockage (5%) — water sits, foam accumulates.
6. Pressure sensor issue (5%) — false Sud detection.

What You're Probably Seeing Right Now

  • Sud on display — machine paused mid-wash.
  • Visible foam in the drum or leaking from dispenser.
  • Machine keeps pausing and resuming — trying to clear suds.
  • Clothes are still soapy after the cycle ends.
  • 5C / SC appears after the Sud code.

DIY Fix — From Easiest to Hardest

1

Wait It Out (20-30 minutes)

Samsung will automatically:
1. Pause to let suds settle.
2. Add a small amount of water.
3. Attempt to drain and re-rinse.
4. This may repeat 2-3 times.

**If the machine clears the suds itself**, it will resume the cycle.
2

Run Rinse+Spin (5 minutes)

If the machine is stuck:
1. Press Pause/Cancel.
2. Select **Rinse+Spin** cycle (NO detergent).
3. Press Start.
4. This flushes the suds with clean water.
3

The Cooking Oil Trick (For Severe Foam)

If foam is extreme:
1. Add **1 tablespoon of cooking oil** directly into the drum.
2. Oil breaks the surface tension of foam instantly.
3. Then run Rinse+Spin.

**Don't worry** — the rinse cycle removes the oil.
4

Fix Your Detergent Usage (Prevention)

**Going forward:**
1. Use ONLY HE detergent (look for the HE symbol).
2. Use **HALF** the recommended amount to start.
3. **Soft water areas:** use 1/3 the recommended amount.
4. Liquid detergent generally foams less than powder.
5. **Never pour detergent directly on clothes** — use the dispenser.
5

Clean Residual Buildup (Monthly)

Previous detergent builds up inside:
1. Run Samsung's **Drum Clean** (Eco Drum Clean) cycle monthly.
2. OR run empty hottest cycle with 2 cups white vinegar.
3. This dissolves residue that causes future suds issues.
6

If Sud Shows With Correct Detergent (Rare)

If you're using HE detergent correctly and still getting Sud:

1. Check for drain clog (dirty water won't leave = foam builds).
2. Clean the debris filter.
3. Check the pressure sensor tube (clogged tube gives false readings).

When to Call a Pro

  • Persistent Sud with correct detergent — sensor or drain issue: $80-$200.
  • Foam damage to electronics — board corrosion: $150-$400.
  • Dispenser not metering properly — actuator: $80-$180.
