Whirlpool Fdl

Door Lock Error

Medium severityExpert Guide

What Your Machine Is Actually Telling You

Fdl means the door lock assembly failed to lock after multiple retries (typically 6 attempts). This is more definitive than F22 — the CCU has given up trying.

Fdl vs F22:
- F22 = first failure to lock.
- Fdl = repeated failures, exhausted retries.

Fdl strongly points to hardware failure rather than a one-time issue.

Common causes:
1. Lock mechanism dead (40%) — PTC element failed permanently.
2. Switch contacts burned (20%) — can't confirm lock.
3. Wiring damage (15%) — broken wire.
4. Door strike worn (10%) — can't reach switch.
5. CCU relay (10%) — not powering lock.
6. Gasket interference (5%) — preventing closure.

What You're Probably Seeing Right Now

  • Fdl after machine clicks multiple times trying to lock.
  • Lock does not engage at all.
  • Or lock engages then releases immediately.
  • Fdl every time you try to start.

DIY Fix — From Easiest to Hardest

1

4. Test switch: continuity when lock actuated.
5. If either fails: replace ($25-50).
4

Replace Lock Assembly (15 minutes)

1. Peel back gasket band at lock area.
2. Remove 2 screws.
